Frequently Asked Questions
What is animal chiropractic?
Animal Chiropractic is a highly effective complementary treatment to regular Veterinary care. Chiropractic is based on the understanding that good health depends, in part, on a normally functioning nervous system. Animal chiropractors use the relationship between the spine and the nervous system to affect the mechanical function of the animal, as well as improve overall health. This is accomplished by finding and treating the abnormal movements of the joints in the spine and extremities. The process is usually completed by hand, but some cases may require the use of a small spring-based tool called an Activator.
What is required to be an animal chiropractor?
There are two types of doctors that can be certified to practice chiropractic on animals. One is a Chiropractor who has taken the additional animal certification and is now a certified animal chiropractor (CAC). The other is Veterinarian who has taken the additional animal chiropractic certification and is a certified veterinary spinal manipulative therapist (CVSMT). It is important to confirm the animal chiropractor you seek has the necessary training and is certified with an AVCA or CoAC approved program.
How do I know when my animal needs chiropractic?
Any change in behaviour in your pet may indicate a dysfunction in the nervous system. Every pet from the lazy couch potato to the high level competition animal needs a little TLC every now and then. The following are the more common reasons people seek chiropractic care for their animals:
- Signs of pain
- Injuries due to falls or accidents
- Limping
- Sporting injuries
- Post-surgical care
- Bowel and bladder dysfunction
What can I expect as a result of using chiropractic care for my animal?
Most owners report their pets have more energy, better movement and easier adaptations to physical limitations following chiropractic adjustments.
What animals can benefit from animal chiropractic?
Any animal with a spine can benefit from chiropractic care. In our practice we primarily treat cats, dogs, and horses. We have also treated alpacas, birds, cattle, goats, guinea pigs, pigs, rabbits, and even turtles. As long as we can safely get our hands on them, they are welcome to try out the benefits of chiropractic.
Can an adjustment make my animal worse?
There is a possibility that your pet may be sore initially after the adjustment, if it persists please contact us so we can better assess the situation at that time.
How long does my animal need off after and adjustment?
48 hours of rest is typically suggested following a chiropractic adjustment.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
There may be a brief moment of pain felt by the animal as the adjustment is made. Often times this is due to the tissues in the area already being tender and irritated because of the joint fixation.
What is an “adjustment”?
A specific high velocity, low amplitude movement used on areas of joint fixation. This technique is used to restore movement and to facilitate proper nerve function. The results of this restoration of movement and proper nerve function include enhanced performance and better quality of life.
How long does an adjustment take?
New patient exams can be expected to take 30 minutes for small animals and 60 minutes for large animals. Follow up adjustments take 15 minutes for small animals and 30 minutes for large animals. Each case may vary slightly, but this is the typical format.
